Consult Day
In the State of Ohio, you are required to:
- Appear in the clinic.
- Meet with the staff to discuss your medical and contraceptive history.
- Have a small amount of blood work done.
- Have an ultrasound to determine the status of your pregnancy and we will also provide a urine pregnancy test if needed.
- Meet with a patient educator to ask questions and discuss your options, in a confidential and non-judgmental atmosphere.
- Meet with the doctor to discuss possible risks and complications that go along with abortion and continued pregnancy.
The length of the visit will depend on what services you are having. It can take anywhere from 2 – 3 hours. When you schedule your second visit, we will give you an estimate of how long it will take and any special instructions you will need to follow. Our staff will support you during your procedure. Afterward, you will rest for a while in the recovery room. You will receive detailed instructions for what to expect after your body will go through changes due to a dramatic drop in the hormones of pregnancy, but you should begin to feel normal within 24 – 48 hours after the procedure. Any nausea, vomiting, or fatique you may have experienced should go away in 24 hours. You may feel bloated for a few days. Feel free to eat whatever you want, but don’t overdo it if you have had nausea and vomiting. You can return to work or school as soon as you feel able, often the next day. Also, we can provide a medical excuse for up to the first 3 days. Most women will have a period within 4-6 weeks. Please be aware that if you are not using birth control you could become pregnant again even before your next period begins
Medical Abortion (Pills) 5 weeks up to 11.6 weeks
How it works:
Your doctor will give you an oral dose of Mifepristone and a dose of Misoprostol to take at home 24 to 48 hours later. Once you take the Misoprostol you may experience cramping in as little as 20 minutes. You will have cramping and bleeding, and the pregnancy will be expelled. Most women pass the pregnancy in 24 hours, but it could take up to 48 hours. We will give you prescriptions to manage any pain or nausea you may experience. Symptoms and Side EffectsMost women will experience cramping and bleeding similar to a normal heavy period. You may see blood clots and tissue that come from the uterus. This is an expected part of ending the pregnancy. Bleeding or spotting lasts an average of 9–16 days and may last for up to 30 days. In rare cases (1% of the time), bleeding can be very heavy and may need to be stopped by a surgical procedure. Common side effects include nausea, abdominal pain, fatigue, fever, dizziness, and diarrhea.
